Even though there are non-governmental organizations in India to help the poor, their project tend not to reach down to the very poorest and are also small scaled, hence making the total number of people assisted small. Furthermore, it is also rare for NGO projects to be financially self-sufficient due to the lack of funds. Finally, although NGOs execute a number of very imaginative projects, many of them appear to be unwilling to innovate in certain areas or activities. Therefore, because of these limitations, the roles of NGOs in alleviating poverty cannot be exaggerated. (Devi, 2013)
They are also not very effective in alleviating urban poverty due to lack of funds and public participation. The basic characteristic of NGO is volunteerism. However, people such as young graduates from social work are more interested in professionalisation rather than volunteerism as the enthusiasm for it seems to have faded these days.

People that have professional education are also not interested to work with NGOs as they have high expectations in terms of salaries, status, opportunities for their growth in the career of their choice.Their vision has been changed and are interested to work in urban areas only. Therefore, it is very difficult to get trained persons who are either willing or trained to work in the rural society where most of NGOs work. Moreover, most of NGOs, already face a lack of funds, and are unable to spend some more funds to give training to the personnel employed in the organization, hence leading to lack of efficient volunteers in NGOs. (Latha and Prabhakar, 2011)
The NGOs raise Rs 40,000 crore - Rs 80,000 crore in funding annually and most of it goes into maintaining the staff on payroll and almost half of the NGOs surveyed have an income of less than US$ 100,000 per annum only, hence they don't have enough funds for the projects. (Taylor, 2000)
